DIY Newborn Romper Tutorial, with pattern.

Dorothy Newborn Romper Tutorial

dorothy newborn costume DIY Wizard of oz newborn costume

I teamed up with Hannah of Buttercup Baby Props for an awesomely themed newborn photo shoot. Hannah is a pretty big deal in the newborn photography world, she makes the most amazing wool layers, bonnets, and props. She’s also super creative, and awesome. I am so proud to call her a friend!

While Hannah needle felted up a tin man bonnet, a scarecrow bonnet, a tin man bonnet, and other props for our themed session, I crafted a gingham romper, fitting for a newborn Dorothy!

The romper was simply adorable, and fit our 5 day-old little model perfectly! I added ruffles to the bum, but that is totally optional! You can obviously choose ANY print/pattern for your romper, and add flair to suit your style.

Fair warning, I am a self-taught sewer…which probably means I do everything “wrong”. Feel free to adapt this pattern, but I will say that it worked GREAT, and fit super well!

Here is the pattern. When you print, make sure not to resize (choose 100% scaling..not fit to page or something else that may resize it).

14” of fabric of your choice

Thin elastic, approximately a yard.

Thread

Sewing machine

Coordinating ribbon/yard for the ties. About a yard needed.

Start by cutting out the pattern pieces, and then connecting the two FRONT pieces. Line up the A triangles, and tape.

Lay patterns on a fold (where indicated) and line up the “FOLD” edge on the fold. Cut out patterns. Cut two of the FRONT piece.

The pattern is made with a 1/8” seam allowance.

Sandwich your ribbon between the two “Front” cut pieces. Place fabric like sides together. Lay the ribbon ends about ½ in from each top corner. Pin the excess ribbon to the center so you don’t accidentally sew over it!

Sew around the edges, leaving the bottom (crotch) open.

Trim bulk, trim corners, etc. Turn right side out, and press. Use something pointy (pen, etc) to turn out the corners completely. Top stitch the front piece after pressing.

For the ruffles, I cut a rectangle that was 2” by 22” and one that was 2” by 14”. I totally winged it for this. I then zig-zag stitched one edge (so it won’t unravel), and used a gathering stich along the other long edge. I ruched the rectangles to a size that looked cute on the bum, and used a zig-zag stitch to attach them along the back piece.

I tie my elastic to a bobby pin, and use the bobby pin to pull the elastic through the pocket. Stitch the elastic on one end, and snug the elastic up (so there is about 5 inches extra, and stitch it on the other end. This traps the elastic in the seam, and ruches the back.

newborn romper tutorial and patternIMG_9091IMG_9090 Next, I line up the sides of the “Back” piece and the “Front” piece, and stich along each side. Because the back has elastic, it will not be as wide, and will not lay flat, but just line up one side at a time. Make sure the lay FRONT and BACK with right sides facing.

IMG_9093

After the side seams are sewn up, line up the crotch of the FRONT and BACK pieces. The back piece will be wider, not to worry. This is because you will be creating a pocket for the elastic in the legs, however the pocket will only be on the back piece. I like to do it this way so the romper lays nice and flat in front.IMG_9094

This last part is a little tricky, and there are TONS of ways to finish a leg hole, but this is what I did. I turned over about ¾” of the leg hole of the back piece, and sewed, creating a pocket for the elastic. I left each end open where it met the front of the leg. Next, use a bobby pin to thread elastic into the leg hole pocket. Secure one end of elastic with a few stitches. Then snug the elastic up, so the leg hole is gathered. The size of you leg hole is up to you, but I made mine a bit roomy to accommodate different sizes of baby. If you are making a romper for a chunky monkey, you will obviously want it a bit loose, and snug it up more for a lean baby. Once you have snugged up the elastic, stich the open end to trap the elastic. Repeat for the other leg hole.IMG_9095

Turn right side out, trim any loose threads, and admire your adorable romper!!

I have had the pleasure of working with this little lady three times now, and I just love watching her grow. She came in today to model some of the adorable vintage rompers and dresses I have in studio. I have been so drawn to the details, colors, and textures of vintage baby clothing and I have been hoarding them for the last few months. I just love they way they photograph, and I am excited to be able to offer them as an outfit option for my clients.

I have a TON of vintage outfits, primarily in newborn – 12 month sizes, but I have a few toddler sized as well. I even have a few adult dresses that would pair gorgeously for a “mommy and me” session. I am in love with the light, airy look and I am excited to try some gorgeous backlighting with these gauzy fabrics.

This little sweetheart rocked her session today, and modeled a TON of my vintage dresses/rompers. She was simply adorable, and even helped us with outfit changes! I am so drawn to the details and colors in these vintage outfits, and I am excited to have so many in studio for my clients to use.

I was so sad to learn that they have moved across the state…but so happy when they booked a session while they were back in town for the weekend. Their family has grown by one since I saw them last, and their little guy is so adorable! So much hair, and chub for days! Big brother shocked me by being a phenomenal listener, and so patient the entire session (NOT typical for a 2 year old!) and big sister was amazing as always. I am crossing my fingers that they book a session with me every time they are in town. Here are a few of my favorites from our session.

This handsome man is 10 months old, and just as charming as could be. I met his family a few months ago for his 6 month session, and can’t wait to see them all again in just a few short months for his CAKE SMASH! All three kids are so easy to work with, and I had a blast with our short time in studio.

This adorable duo came to the studio yesterday, and they were amazing! Big brother did such an amazing job being patient, and was so so good at listening to my direction. Little bro (7 months) was super chill, and so cute!! This little guy LOVES his blanket, and although we didn’t have HIS Norman (teddy bear) in studio, he loved playing with the teddy we had here!

Monroe Family Photo Session, June Bug photography

I met this family a few months ago for their little lady’s 3 month session, and I was THRILLED that they wanted to have a family session at their beautiful property in Monroe, WA. I knew as soon as I pulled into their driveway that the location was going to be PERFECT. They had a beautiful plum tree, overflowing with giant, ripe plums. Their home is stunning, and I instantly fell in love with their gorgeous front porch (complete with rocking chairs!)

I just love photographing families, and I love to capture the connection between family members. Some photos from our session are posed, some are candid, but all show the love this family has for each other. My heart is full knowing this family has captured this moment in time, and will be able to share these images for generations to come!

This happy little man has grown SO MUCH in the last 9 months! I cannot wait to see him again in just a few more month for his cake smash!! I mentioned to mom that he looks the same as he did at his 6 month session..just bigger! So I had to go back and compare a photo from his 6 month session to Saturday’s 9 month session. Isn’t he adorable!? I am so lucky I get to see this family every few months…I am hoping they keep coming this frequently until he’s 18! Ha!

I adore this family. I worked with them for their little guy’s newborn session, and I am so happy that they wanted to work with me again for a family session at Mukilteo Lighthouse Park over the weekend. I am so in love with the location…not so in love with the HOARDS OF PEOPLE THERE!! Had to get creative to make sure there weren’t any photo bombs. smile emoticon Here are a few of my favorites from the session

I really enjoy family sessions, as it allows me the opportunity to capture connections between the family. Some of the images will be posed, some candid, and all of them will show the love your family has for each other.

Mukilteo Lighthouse park an amazing location for family portraits. There are so many fantastic natural backdrops, a beautiful beach, adorable white historic buildings, a lighthouse, beautiful gardens, trees. The only downside is working around all the other families and photographers enjoying the beautiful setting!

I met this tiny girl and her mom and dad just days before her daddy was set to deploy. I am soooo glad that we were able to find a time to fit them in, as I cannot imagine how difficult it would be to head off to serve our country while your little one is so young. I hope that he was able to treasure these images, and I hope to see them all again soon to update their gallery.

I am hoping that by this time next year, most of my workload will be photographing newborns. I have definitely found my calling, and I just adore newborn sessions. Don’t get me wrong, I will keep doing family sessions, and milestone sessions (I LOVE THOSE TOO) but I am excited about the prospect of working while both my kids are in school during the week, and having my weekends back to spend with my family!

Our first meeting was for a 2nd birthday photo session, and it was awesome! Then, a few short weeks later, we had a newborn session for their baby brother. This family is simply adorable, and I loved every moment I spent with them. I am crossing my fingers that they keep coming back for baby’s milestone sessions!

This birthday boy is 2 years old, and simply adorable. He brought his beloved monkey, and we had a great time in the studio. I have decided to start having families bring in a favorite toy/stuffy so I can give kiddos a keepsake photo of it!! I just love the idea of kiddos having a professional photo of their favorite stuffed animal.
