Baby’s First Year Photos

I adore having clients that sign up for my “Baby’s First Year” package! I get to see these little ones grow, change, and develop their personalities throughout the year, and we celebrate with a cake smash at the end! From maternity, to newborn session I get to know moms and dads, and through the rest of the year we all are in awe of how much these tiny ones grow in just one year! No matter how many babies I see grow, I am still astounded by how much their little personalities develop each time I see them!

This family opted out of a maternity session for their Baby’s First Year package, so we came up with a custom package to fit! Here are a few of my favorites from the last year! I saw this little peanut for her newborn session, two milestone mini sessions, and we celebrated the year with a fun filled cake smash! I will definitely miss seeing this sweetheart every few months!!

Newborn Session with June Bug Photography

Newborn sessions are such a joy, they are honestly one of my favorite types of session. I love getting to meet the newest member of your family, snuggling baby, and getting to know my amazing clients.

Newborn sessions are a completely different type of session, as we let baby run the show. I follow baby’s lead, and try to get baby nice and sleepy for those curly, sleepy poses. Some babies are alert, and don’t want to miss a thing, so naturally…we photograph baby’s beautiful wide eyes, wrap baby up snug (flailing arms and legs tend to startle baby, and can lead to a grumpy little one!) Newborn sessions are longer than my typical sessions, being between 2 to 3 hours long. We use this time to let baby relax, eat, to change baby, etc. Newborn babies tend to eat frequently, especially when they are being posed, moved, etc. during a session. We don’t rush the process! Newborn sessions are also warm. I keep the studio around 75 degrees during a newborn session (vs 70 during a normal session). This allows baby to be comfortable and cozy for those naked poses, and to be nice and toasty and sleepy.

This little man made my job easy. He was adorable, and super patient with me during his session. Fair warning, if you show up to your session with awesome tattoos…I’ll probably ask you to show them off. How sweet does this little peanut look all snuggled up in dad’s arms?! I typically photograph newborns when they are between one and two weeks old. I have found that babies tend to be most cooperative during this window of time, and have had the best luck getting both sleepy, snuggly images as well as content, awake images. If you are thinking about getting newborn portraits done, I recommend reaching out early in you pregnancy to get on the calendar! I also offer maternity sessions, and would love to get to know you during a maternity session to capture your beautiful growing belly! June Bug photography studio is located in the heart of mill creek, and we serve clients from Mill Creek, Everett, Bothell, Seattle, Snohomish County, Edmonds, Bellevue, Redmond, and more! We have a beautiful studio stocked with gorgeous layers, wraps, props, hats, outfits, headbands, and more.

Newborn photos in Mill Creek, Baby boy

I KNOW that planning for newborn photos takes a lot of energy. How do I know this? Whelp, when my kiddos (now 7 and 9 years old) were newborns…I didn’t schedule photos. I *wish* I could go back in time and tell myself that I would regret not making it happen. My goal with my clients is to make the entire experience as stress free as possible, to have fun, and to create gorgeous images that you will treasure FOREVER.

I met this family several years ago for (now) Big Brother’s newborn session. I just love seeing my favorite clients as their families grow and change, and I have so much fun capturing their personalities. This little man was so chill during his session, and big brother is completely smitten with him. Big brother made sure to check on his little bro regularly, and loved his snuggle time with him.

I hold newborn sessions in my Mill Creek studio, primarily because I have so many beautiful outfits, props, backdrops, as well as my lighting set-up all ready to go. I love that my families can just show up with baby, and sit back and relax while I get to work soothing, posing, and photographing baby (and the rest of the family, of course!) Here are a few of my favorite images from this little man’s recent newborn session.

This set up is created with the help of Luisa Dunn’s gorgeous digital backdrops. His little bee snuggle sack and bonnet are handmade by the talented PaturiciPentruPitici

These next two images are both photographed on the gorgeous white wool layer (handmade by Mama Knits), but for the second image I have photoshopped him onto a digital backdrop that I created in studio. I love how versatile digital backdrops are. I can keep baby sleepy, settled while still being able to provide diverse images for client galleries. I don’t have to waste precious sleeping baby time to perfect the more elaborate set ups. I can photograph those on their own, and photoshop baby into them after the session.

I just love these family photos. They just so clearly capture the love this family has for each other. Look at baby’s content little smile while he is snuggled in big brothers arms!

This little man was pure joy to work with! He had just the sweetest little curl of hair on his forehead, and was so calm, sleepy, and ADORABLE! I have been playing around a bit with creating my own digital backdrops, and decided to use one of his images on a digital backdrop I created a few weeks ago. I love being able to get creative in studio, but not take away from sleepy baby time during the actual session. Such a fun way to surprise parents with an image they have no idea to expect!

I’ve been shooting a lot more on my darker backdrops, and using rich color too! I think that means fall is on the way!

I simply adore working with newborns, and every session is completely different. Babies come in all different shapes, sizes, temperaments, and families have different tastes in color, props, etc. I try to design every session around mom and dad’s preferences for colors, props, themes, etc, and I follow baby’s lead when it comes to posing. Some babies love being snuggled up and wrapped, some..not so much. Some babies fall into a deep sleep and let me pose them to perfection…some keep a watchful eye while I’m working. I just love getting to know these tiny babies and creating beautiful images that already show their little personalities!

June Bug Photography is based in Mill Creek, WA. Photographer Melissa Jenkins has a gorgeous studio stocked with outfits, props, backdrops, wraps, hats, and MORE. Seriously, you can show up with baby (and food for baby!) and I’ll take care of the rest! I recommend getting your newborn session on the books a few months prior to baby’s due date. I only take on a limited number of babies for each month, to ensure I am able to fit everyone in when baby arrives. I pencil in baby’s due date, and then have clients message me as soon as baby arrives to schedule the actual session date/time.

Newborn photography Session, baby boy. Mill Creek.

Newborn photography is my jam. This has been the summer of babies over at June Bug Photography! We have had over 20 newborns in studio in the last two months, and I’m LOVING it!

I had so much fun getting to know this adorable family, and baby brother was sooo good to me! I’ve been challenging myself to incorporate a bit more color into my styling, while still rocking the neutrals..and I have to say, I’m loving the color! I am still a neutral lover at heart, but I also love the beautiful blues, and greens we used! I’ve started incorporating digital backdrops into my workflow, which allows me to create stunning works of art from images of your baby! I pose baby, and shoot with the intent on adding a digital backdrop to the image. I stick to images that are still natural, realistic, and beautiful. Can you guess which image has a digital backdrop?

Big brother was a little nervous to be in front of the camera, but you wouldn’t know it from his images! I always enjoy meeting and playing with these “big” brothers and sisters, as their world has been completely changed in just a few days time. It warms my heart to see the love they have for their new baby, and this big brother clearly loves his little bro!

I customize each newborn session to my clients tastes, preferences, etc. and design different setups that fit them perfectly! My studio is full of beautiful props, blankets, textures, wraps, outfits, bonnets, and more! Most of the items I have in studio are handmade, and simply stunning. I met this little man’s mama and dad during their maternity session, and knew immediately that he was going to be welcomed into this world by MANY adoring fans. He was such an amazing little sleeper, and totally rocked his newborn session. Baby’s nursery is navy and gold, and he looks absolutely adorable in navy!

I’m pretty smitten with his full head of hair!

I just love planning out a custom newborn session, using colors, textures, and themes my clients suggest. Each newborn session is so different, and it is such a creative process to plan, pose, photograph and edit these session. I can’t wait to see this little man again for his milestone session.

Mill Creek Newborn Photography, baby girl!

I have had a string of newborn baby boys in studio the last few months, so I got a bit carried away with this little muffin! She has the most beautiful hair, and looks PERFECT with the mint backdrop!

Mom and dad weren’t feeling up to being in photos (they looked amazing, but I get it. These first few weeks are INSANITY, and most mamas and dads aren’t feeling their best)…but they did want to have their hands in some of the images. I just love how cozy their sweet little girl looks all snuggled up in their hands. These images are so perfect because it really shows how tiny and small newborns are in the first few weeks!

She slept like a champ, so we were able to cruise through allllll the different setups I had planned. I have some parents wonder WHY newborn photographers want a nice, sleepy baby. The answer is pretty simple. They are so much easier to photograph when they aren’t squirming. Although, a squirmy newborn is ADORABLE in real life…capturing that movement as a photo can often look awkward. Having a nice sleepy baby allows me to get the perfect angle, and to focus on showing baby’s tiny features, sweet lashes, etc. It is so much faster and easier to transition from pose to pose when baby is zonked.

June Bug Photography specializes in newborn photography in Mill Creek and the greater snohomish area. I have a beautiful studio in the heart of mill creek, and it is stocked with beautiful, natural props and textures. I literally have everything needed to create a custom session for your family (except, of course, baby!) I also love maternity photography, baby photography, and first birthday / cake smash photography.

Mandrake Baby, Harry Potter themed Newborn photos. Mill Creek Newborn photographer.

It’s a little embarrassing to admit that I already owned every single item in this set-up of a tiny Mandrake Baby. Any other hard-core Harry Potter fans out there? (Scroll down for a tutorial to make your own Mandrake HAT!!)

Every few months, I’ll get a fun idea in my head..and the only way to get it OUT OF MY HEAD is to actually make it happen. I had an adorable knit hat from Ulaby, and I just loved the way the cable knit looked like braided branches of a tree. I decided to modify my newborn hat and add some stems and leaves. I realize that I am totally not the first person to turn a baby into a Mandrake, nor will I be the last..but I tried to create something different, fun, and beautiful. I tried to imagine what the Hogwarts Greenhouse would look like, between Herbology classes with Professor Sprout.

Here are some sweet sleeping Mandrake Photos

Some Baby Mandrake with his Mama (don’t forget ear protection!)

And some behind the scene images of my Hogwarts Greenhouse set.

To modify my bonnet, I used the following materials:

Needle Felting Needle

Brown Wool Roving (I used about an Oz)

Knit Hat (Mine was handmade from Ulaby, but you can use any brown bonnet/hat that fits baby!)

Needle Felting Foam (THIS kit looks like a great way to get needle, foam, and roving if you don’t already have them!)

Fake Leaves

Creative Newborn photography, Digital backdrops

I have recently begun building in composite images into my newborn photography workflow. I have created a few digital backdrops of my own, as well as purchased some amazing digital backdrops from the talented Luisa Dunn from Luisa Dunn Photography.

Creating newborn images using a digital backdrop is a fun way to add variety to my client galleries, and to create some stunning pieces of art. I have been surprising this week’s newborn clients with digitally composited images and I have been hearing wonderful feedback from my clients. Creating art using a digital backdrop requires a bit of preplanning, and I shoot the image with the backdrop in mind. Then, using some photoshop magic, and a bit of creativity, I can make a completely new image to offer my clients. I love that I can get two completely different “feels” from one shot!

Here are a few of my recent composites using Luisa Dunn’s digital backdrops! I am excited to continue offering these to clients!

Baby E, Mill Creek Newborn Photography Session

Baby E, Mill Creek Newborn Photography Session

Meet baby E. He is just perfection! I may have squealed when I saw his handsome head of hair. He is simply adorable, and he was WIDE awake during his session. He was super chill, and had the most gorgeous eyes, and just watched me the entire session. I met mom and dad during their maternity session, so I already knew he would be super cute…mom and dad are both stunners (a few of my favorites from their maternity session here)

For newborn sessions, I like to get an idea of what colors, textures, and poses mom and dad love. I send out a questionnaire in advance, and pull a variety of different set ups, props, blankets, wraps, etc before the family arrives. This allows me to plan out poses ahead of time, and get all the props stuffed and ready for baby. Doing this ahead of time saves me SO MUCH TIME during the session, and allows me to maximize on my “happy baby” time. Often newborns take some time to soothe and settle, and I like to move from setup to setup with the least amount of movement/disruption to baby. Mom and dad requested neutrals and some blues, which of course made my heart flutter. I love me some neutrals. This little man flew through every setup I had planned, and was such a little champ!

My studio is in Mill Creek, WA, and I literally have everything needed for your newborn photography session (well, except baby…of course). I have a huge collection of gorgeous, soft wraps, fluffy blankets, beautiful hand crafted props, dresses and outfits for baby, mama and siblings..and more! My studio is my happy place, and I hope my clients feel comfortable and relaxed while they are in my care! If you are looking to book a newborn session with June Bug Photography, drop me a line here I typically schedule newborn sessions so families come in before baby is 2 weeks old, as this is the idea timeframe for a relaxed, sleepy baby that will be cozy in the typical newborn poses. This is not to say that we won’t get gorgeous images of older babies! I have had babies in at one month that slept like a dream, and loved the squishy newborn poses as well.
