Balloon art: Double Stuffing Balloon tutorial from June Bug Photography

I LOVE making balloon garlands for cake smash sessions, and I have done a few tutorial videos showing how I construct my balloon garlands. As cool as the garland making process is, I think DOUBLE STUFFING is way more fun! I don’t always double stuff my balloons, but I just love the variety in tones double stuffing balloons gives!

What is double stuffing a balloon?

-Double stuffing is exactly as it sounds…you STUFF a balloon into another ballon before blowing your balloon(s) up. The color of balloon on the inside changes the overall color of your blown up balloon. You can make balloons darker, cooler, warmer, and more! I absolutely love a tone-on-tone look in all of my photography, and double stuffing is such a great way to create subtle shifts in color while still keeping the overall vibe monochromatic. I love making gradient balloon garlands!

How to double stuff a balloon:

Double stuffing is super simple. You’ll need a sturdy straw (I use a reusable boba straw), a balloon hand pump (you can use an electric pump, but you typically have to stretch the double stuffed balloon a bunch before the electric pump will be able to inflate, and I just find it faster to hand pump) , and two balloons. I always place the balloon with the color I am wanting to be closet to on the outside, and the “shifter” balloon on the inside. Place the “shifter” balloon on one end of the straw, then stretch the main balloon on top of the shifter balloon. Then you will pull the double stuffed balloon off the straw by the top of the balloon. Then use your hand pump to inflate, and finally, tie off the INSIDE (shifter) balloon.

I love using browns, grey, and black balloons to shift the main color of my balloons. I have found that lighter main colors tend to shift more when double stuffing.

In my examples below, I show double stuffing with the following “shifter” colors. These colors are on the inside of the double stuffed balloon. The colors in the images below are white, tan, brown, gray and black. I also show an example of the main color balloon without anything inside (not double stuffed).  I do some fun double stuffing math, showing how the different shifter colors can make subtle changes to your main/outside balloon. Using double stuffed balloons, you can experiment with color matching, creating gradients of balloons, ore just mixing up fun colors!

Tips for a successful cake smash session

Hi friends! Cake smash sessions are one of my favorite type of sessions, so I figured I would share some things I’ve learned over the last 10 years in the business that will help you with a successful cake smash! Whether you are a photographer, a mom with a little one turning one soon, a client of mine, or anywhere in-between, I’d love to share some of my tips and tricks.

mill creek newborn maternity and family photographer_1078.jpg

First of all, and most importantly, I let baby lead the show. I take time to read baby’s mood (is baby shy? does the birthday boy seem to have stranger danger? are they walking yet? Are they curious?) and use that information to guide my approach. For babies with “stranger danger”, I will let mom/dad get baby in position, etc until they warm up to me. If they are on the move, I will grab chairs/buckets/etc to slow them down a bit and grab their attention to keep them in the shooting space.
mill creek newborn maternity and family photographer_1411.jpg
-Not all babies like cake. Be fully prepared for the birthday boy/girl to hate touching, looking at, or being near the cake. I typically start with portraits, then bring out the cake and capture baby’s approach. Some dive right in, some want nothing to do with it, some touch it and immediately regret it. All of these reactions are PERFECT, and all about the baby in that moment. For babies that are all about the cake I just let them go for it. I will reposition baby as needed to make sure I am capturing flattering images, but I will let baby go to town if they are interested in the cake. If baby hates the cake, I’ll have mom or dad take a pinch of cake and pop it in baby’s mouth. Sometimes this little taste will convince baby that cake is amazing, and they go from there. Sometimes not. Some babies hate the feeling of frosting on their fingers, for those little ones, we wipe their little fingers off (so they aren’t upset) and I’ll hand them a little wooden spoon so they can still eat the cake without getting messy. Again, notice, this is all about following baby’s lead. I don’t recommend forcing baby to touch the cake, as this often leads to making the little one upset and unable to reset.

-Before your cake smash session, have baby try cake! The day before your session, give baby a cupcake/piece of cake to try. This will let them practice and try the sweetness of cake in their comfort zone. It’s also a great opportunity to make sure baby doesn’t have any reactions to the ingredients in the cake (and give us time to come up with a plan B if they do have a reaction).

-Choosing a cake: I have my clients bring the cake, for several reasons, including potential allergy issues and to make sure parents get the cake they truly want. It’s also great because my clients can choose what works for their budget, and I give a range of recommendations for local bakers. I have a few recommendations as far as the cake goes: 1. Avoid chocolate and red frosting. Chocolate frosting and chocolate cake can look a bit like baby got into a dirty diaper during smash (especially with those close up images, where the context of the cake smash are removed). Red frosting/filling looks like a massacre. 2. Pastels or no dyes in the frosting is ideal. Deep colors in frosting tends to dye baby’s skin, which will be difficult to wash off for the bath portion of the session. 3. OVERSWEET frostings tend to shock baby. Cakes from the grocery store are often made with super sweet frostings, if possible, ask for a whipped frosting or something less sweet. 4. Avoid fondant, decorations on cake/etc. These things can be choking hazards, so best to leave them off. Buttercream frosting seems to be best! 5. If you refrigerate your cake the night before your session, be sure to take it out of the fridge a few hours before your session. Babies tend to prefer room temp cakes, and the frosting is much easier for them to get into.
mill creek newborn maternity and family photographer_1379.jpg

-Choosing an outfit: Bring along a few different outfits, make sure they fit (try ’em on the night before!) Babies tend to get lost in clothing that is too big. Some babies HATE trying to crawl in dresses, so make sure you have some options if that’s your little one! I have TONS of outfits for my clients to use, and typically pull 5-6 outfits that coordinate with the cake smash set up in in advance. For the outfit baby will wear during the smash: make sure it’s washable! I love minimal coverage for the cake smash portion, love seeing those baby rolls, tiny toes, etc. I recommend a diaper cover, suspenders (for boys), sweet romper for little girls, etc.
mill creek newborn maternity and family photographer_1464.jpg

-Go with the flow. Keep the energy high, happy, and keep moving! I try to move at a pretty good clip, so baby doesn’t get frustrated or bored during the session. I have lots of fun distractions/toys to get the birthday boy/girl to smile and look at the camera, so my parents can just sit back and watch the show! Cake smash sessions are high energy, super fun, and so much fun!

-Finish with a bath! ALL my little babies LOVE bath time. I like to finish cake smash sessions with a sweet bath setup after the cake. I typically have mom and dad clean up baby before the bath (this way your bath time images aren’t as obviously birthday related, and can be displayed in the bathroom, etc).

Boho Cake Smash

If you’re a regular here, you know how obsessed I am with cake smashes.
Celebrating the HUGE milestone of baby’s first birthday brings me so much joy. Over the years, I have seen so many different personalities, so many different cake eating techniques, and I have loved every minute of it.

Some babies are timid, and not interested in the cake. Some babies (can I even call them that after their first birthday? Toddlers? Ugh, they grow so fast!) HATE the feeling of frosting on their tiny fingers. Some babies gag at the taste of so much sugar. But this little one? Legit picked the cake up and tried to take it home with her.

Mama brought along these giant balloons, and they were so strong they nearly pulled my backdrop off the floor. Also, they ended up on my ceiling twice. Don’t worry though, I’m scrappy and got them off the 19′ ceilings. I’m practically Macgyver. They pull together this peachy, boho look so beautifully it was totally worth the struggle.

Whether the birthday girl (or boy) loves the cake, hates the cake, or is totally indifferent to the cake..they all LOVE the bubble bath afterward. Universally. I’ve done hundreds of cake smashes, and bath time is by far the favorite. A cake smash wouldn’t be complete without a splash after, and I have a collection of adorable tubs, basins, etc for the bath afterwards (my favorite is this adorable claw foot tub).

Baby’s First Year Photos

I adore having clients that sign up for my “Baby’s First Year” package! I get to see these little ones grow, change, and develop their personalities throughout the year, and we celebrate with a cake smash at the end! From maternity, to newborn session I get to know moms and dads, and through the rest of the year we all are in awe of how much these tiny ones grow in just one year! No matter how many babies I see grow, I am still astounded by how much their little personalities develop each time I see them!

This family opted out of a maternity session for their Baby’s First Year package, so we came up with a custom package to fit! Here are a few of my favorites from the last year! I saw this little peanut for her newborn session, two milestone mini sessions, and we celebrated the year with a fun filled cake smash! I will definitely miss seeing this sweetheart every few months!!

Smash and Splash! Celebrating baby’s first birthday with a cake smash and bubble bath.

I *adore* cake smashes! I’ve actually started to refer to these sessions as “Smash and Splash” sessions, because we allllllways love the bubble bath at the end. I have several photographer friends who are not the biggest fans of cake smash sessions, but I am definitely a HUGE fan of the mess, celebration, giggles, and over the top fun that happens during a cake smash.

I thought I’d share a few of my tips and tricks that I use during cake smash sessions to keep the session fun, easy, and simple! Before letting you in on my secrets (kidding), I want to share a few photos from my most recent cake smash. This little dude is ADORABLE, had the most expressive eyes…and did NOT like his cake. Here’s the thing…sometimes, babies aren’t a fan. The texture is weird, it sticks to their fingers, it is SUPER SWEET, which can be a bit shocking to some littles…and it’s messy. Not all babies are a fan of the cake portion of the cake smash, but I’ve learned to embrace whatever reaction baby has to the experience!

mill creek cake smash and splash

Some ways you can prepare BEFORE your Smash and Splash session:

-Most importantly, be sure to let your photographer know if baby has any allergies, skin sensitivities, etc! Common food allergens can often be found in cake ingredients (eggs, for example, or cows milk in the buttercream) Be sure to let your photographer know if your little one has any known allergies. If so, work with them to find a cake that does not contain those potential allergens. I give my clients the option to bring their own cake, or for an additional fee, I will have a local cake decorator deliver your custom cake to the studio.

-Give baby a taste of a cupcake or cake BEFORE the cake smash. This gives them the opportunity to taste the sweet frosting, experience the texture, etc. Often, just knowing what to expect can help baby dive into the cake during their cake smash!

-Manage your expectations! Some babies don’t like cake. That’s ok! Some adults don’t like cake, we all have different tastes. I’m not going to force your little one to eat or touch something they don’t want to. We will, however, capture their approach to the cake, their reaction to the cake, and try some tricks to get them to explore the cake a bit. I sometimes pop a cheerio into the back of the cake to try to entice baby to take a pinch. I also have adorable little spoons that baby can use if they are not loving the texture of the cake.

-Bring a change of clothes. I typically begin cake smash sessions with family portraits, which means you get to have some updated family portraits done. Following family photos, I recommend changing into clothes can can be frosted. No joke! While I am photographing, it is all hands on deck keeping the birthday boy/girl from wandering off the set. We have towels, rags, etc ready to scoop baby up and keep them in the right spot…but I always advise parents wear something they can get frosting on. Because, it will happen.

-Make sure the birthday boy/girl is fed, rested, and feeling well! This makes for an amazing session! Don’t feel like you need to keep baby hungry for the cake smash. Honestly, we don’t want them eating the entire cake on an empty stomach…and hungry babies tend to be grumpy babies!

-Fill out your questionnaire with any special decor color requests, etc! This helps me get your session all set up before you arrive.

Some things we do DURING the session:

-I typically begin cake smash sessions with family portraits. I do this to give your little one a little bit of time to warm up to me, the studio, etc while still feeling comfortable and safe in mom and dad’s arms.

-I have my sets all set-up and ready to go ahead of time. Minimizing transition time keeps baby’s interest, and helps the session run smoothly.

-If baby isn’t interested in the cake, we try things like taking a piece off the back and letting baby taste the cake part (less sweet frosting). We also have forks and spoons that your little one can use if they aren’t a fan of the texture.

-If baby HATES the cake, we will photograph their approach, a few candid images..and then move on. Trying to force a little one into something they don’t want is a recipe for disaster, and we don’t want to make baby so upset we can’t calm them down for the rest of the session.

-BATHTIME! Following the smash, I typically set up a tiny claw foot bubble bath and let baby splash in the warm water. This tends to be the favorite portion of the session for most babies. This also helps get baby nice and clean following the smash. Win win! Be sure to let me know if baby has any skin sensitivities and we can leave out the bubbles!

I just adore cake smash sessions because they let your little one be the star of the show, they bring out their tiny personalities (reserved, shy, messy, outgoing, funny, grumpy) and allow baby, parents and me to share in the joy!

Reach out to me if you are thinking of a Smash and Splash session for your little one’s first birthday! I have outfits, banners, helium tank and balloons, cake plates, backdrops and more in studio! My cake smash sets are typically pretty simple, and allow your birthday boy or girl to be the center of attention. Our studio is located in the heart of Mill Creek, WA.

Time Flies Themed Cake Smash by June Bug Photography

If you follow my page, you already know I’m pretty obsessed with cake smash sessions. Celebrating such a HUGE milestone, laughing, and having fun with my clients brings me so much joy.

My cake smash set ups are typically pretty simple, allowing the birthday boy (or girl!) to be the star of the show. I have an industrial size helium tank, balloons in every color, simple banners, and a collection of cake plates available for client use. This little many had a “TIME FLIES” theme for his birthday party and cake smash, and I just ADORE how it turned out! I always say that my job is a bittersweet reminder of how quickly time flies, and this session was definitely that. I met mama and dad before baby was born for their maternity session, and they came back throughout the year as members of my “Grow with Me” package. This handsome man has changed SO MUCH since his newborn session (seriously, he looks like a different baby!) I love watching these tiny humans grow, reach milestones, develop their personalities, and I especially adore capturing these moment for my families.

This cake is made by the talented cakes and poppers, and Bobbie always knocks it out of the park with her cake designs.

Cake smash sessions with June Bug Photography typically start with family portraits, then we get a few traditional portraits of the birthday boy (or girl). From there, we bring out the cake and laugh until baby is sufficiently loaded up on sugar. Some babies HATE the cake portion, some are obsessed, but I just love seeing how their little personalities navigate this new situation. ALMOST EVERY BABY ends up finger-painting with the frosting, which I think it hilarious. Some don’t like the texture, some love getting messy. Some don’t like the taste, some try to eat the entire cake. Some are gentle, and dainty with the frosting…others sit in it. Whatever they do, I love it all!

Following the smash, we clean baby up with an adorable bubble bath. This is often the very favorite for our birthday boy (or girl!). Splashing, laughing, and celebrating being ONE.

June bug photography is located in mill creek, wa. Our beautiful studio is full of stunning props, outfits, backdrops, and decor. Reach out if you are thinking of doing a cake smash to celebrate your little one’s first birthday!
