june bug photography newborn photographer seahawks 12th manI had a VERY busy few weeks before Christmas, and I have some catching up to do with my blog posts! Here is an adorable little man who was such a trooper for his session. Dad wasn’t able to join us, as he had VERY important commitments (aka, the game was on) so we suprised him with an adorable Sehawks setup.

Finding my style: Loving neutrals!

I pulled a few of my favorite images from my recent sessions to update my canvases in studio…and I noticed a trend. LOOOOOTS of neutral colors (cream, brown, white, etc) some with a pop of color. I am kind of obsessed with how they look together!

I have stocked my studio with colors, props, backdrops, hats, outfits, etc that I love..everything here was in studio. I am a bit of a prop addict, but I just love seeing my vision come to life in these images.

I am shifting my focus to primarily newborn photography, baby milestone photography, and kids! I have found that I love babies and kids so much, and my schedule only allows for a few sessions a week (for now, hopefully I can increase my load once the kids are in school) and I have decided to focus on what I love most.

I will be posting a ton of my most recent sessions in the next week.

Wizard of Oz themed Newborn Photos! June Bug Photography, Snohomish county family photographer

I had planned on waiting ’til Halloween to post these, but I just can’t wait any longer! I teamed up with the wonderfully talented brains behind Buttercup Baby Props (Aaron and Hannah) for this adorable Wizard of Oz themed Newborn Photos session. Props/layers/bonnets all made by Buttecup Baby Props! These are a few of my favorites from the session:

I just LOVE the adorable baby in the gingham romper, she makes the perfect Dorothy! I can’t decide which is my favorite outfit, Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, or the Tin Man. She’s pretty stinkin’ cute in them all!!

I am hoping that by this time next year, most of my workload will be photographing newborns. I have definitely found my calling, and I just adore newborn sessions. Don’t get me wrong, I will keep doing family sessions, and milestone sessions (I LOVE THOSE TOO) but I am excited about the prospect of working while both my kids are in school during the week, and having my weekends back to spend with my family!

Family Photos…in the rain! June bug Photography, Snohomish County family photographer.

Family Photos … in the rain!

Remember the POURING rain and crazy wind we had on Saturday morning? Me too! Mostly because I was IN IT, photographing this awesome (and brave) family. The deluge started right when we were scheduled to begin our session, so we decided that since we were all there, dressed, and ready…we would give it a go! I’m so glad we did, because these images are so adorable!

Mom was worried that the kiddos wouldn’t have the patience for a bunch of posed family shots, so we opted for a fun, casual, “lifestyle” session (with some posed family shots in there too). I just love how the images turned out! I have to admit that I wasn’t confident that I would get this many awesome images, as my glasses were covered with rain I couldn’t see through them! Finally, I had to take my glasses off and put them in my pocket. I had my camera wrapped up in a ziploc bag, and brought along umbrellas for the family. Their little daughter was so sweet, and kept asking “Do you have an umbrella? Where is your umbrella?!” I totally would have used one, if I had an extra arm! My fingers were prunes by the end of the session, and I am pretty sure it is the first time I have gotten wrinkly fingers from rain (and not a LOOOOOONG bath!, which I definitely needed after the session).

June Bug photographer Melissa Jenkins specializes in family photography, including newborns, babies, and kids of all ages. Studio sessions are held in my in-home studio in Snohomish (while technically “Snohomish”, we are located much closer to Mill Creek). Stunning Maternity Photography Session, Snohomish County photographer June Bug Photography.

A bit about my recent Maternity Photography Session

I have a bit of a confession to make…I don’t have ANY photos of myself while I was pregnant. I remember feeling so HUGE, and uncomfortable, and grumpy. I avoided the camera, and I had no idea that just a few short years later I would regret not having any photos (let alone a few GOOD photos).

Luckily, this mama is not me. She is gorgeous, stunning, and sweet…and I had such a great time photographing her, her bump, and her adorable little daughter.

Here are a few of my favorites:

I spoke with a good friend about my regrets about not having any photos of myself pregnant, and how I just don’t get excited about maternity sessions. This is what she said to me: “Let me show you how I do maternity sessions. Then you will LOVE them.” Turns out, she was right! Hannah (of Buttercup Baby Props) came to my studio, and we did a maternity session together…and I LOVED IT!! I have since bought a bunch of new gorgeous, flowy gowns, and I am excited to bring in more mamas!! I just love how Hannah showed me to focus on making mama comfortable, relaxed, and making them look their best!! Gah, now I just wish I had known Hannah 4 years ago!!

Back to school pictures – with style! June Bug Photography Snohomish county photographer.

Back to school pictures can be boring…but not around here! This little one is homeschooled, and mom decided to book a fun back to school session to celebrate the start of her school year. She came into the studio in the most adorable outfit, complete with matching necklace, bracelet…and brand spankin’ new shoes. She was so sweet, and just a perfect little model. The only challenge? Getting her to look at the camera! We got creative, and just might have broken out the “fart gun” to draw her gaze (*hint*, we totally did!). It was such a fun session, and she just looks perfect! Just look at her curls?! Am I right?!

More adorable babies in vintage dresses! June Bug Photography, snohomish county photographer.

I did back-to-back sessions with some seriously gorgeous little girls last week. They both modeled my collection of vintage rompers, dresses, bonnets, and more. I am so smitten with the entire look, and I hope all my moms choose to go with a simple, neutral, vintage look.

This little lady is already 7 months old, and just keeps getting cuter!! I love that she is almost too big for the blue bed prop, as she was posed in it for her newborn session as well! I am thrilled that baby A is a part of my “Grow with me” plan, because that means I get to see her a whole bunch before she turns one!! Here are a few of my favorites from her session.

These two are simply adorable! Big brother was so sweet with his little sister, and I just love the simplicity of this image. I will likely be overloading you with images from today, because this is literally the FIRST photo I edited..and I know I am going to love them all. I got to use a bunch of my vintage dresses & rompers with little sister today, and I am just in love with the vintage neutral style. love.

DIY Newborn Romper Tutorial, with pattern.

Dorothy Newborn Romper Tutorial

dorothy newborn costume DIY Wizard of oz newborn costume

I teamed up with Hannah of Buttercup Baby Props for an awesomely themed newborn photo shoot. Hannah is a pretty big deal in the newborn photography world, she makes the most amazing wool layers, bonnets, and props. She’s also super creative, and awesome. I am so proud to call her a friend!

While Hannah needle felted up a tin man bonnet, a scarecrow bonnet, a tin man bonnet, and other props for our themed session, I crafted a gingham romper, fitting for a newborn Dorothy!

The romper was simply adorable, and fit our 5 day-old little model perfectly! I added ruffles to the bum, but that is totally optional! You can obviously choose ANY print/pattern for your romper, and add flair to suit your style.

Fair warning, I am a self-taught sewer…which probably means I do everything “wrong”. Feel free to adapt this pattern, but I will say that it worked GREAT, and fit super well!

Here is the pattern. When you print, make sure not to resize (choose 100% scaling..not fit to page or something else that may resize it).

newborn romper pattern and tutorial Materials:

14” of fabric of your choice

Thin elastic, approximately a yard.

Thread

Sewing machine

Coordinating ribbon/yard for the ties. About a yard needed.

Start by cutting out the pattern pieces, and then connecting the two FRONT pieces. Line up the A triangles, and tape.

Lay patterns on a fold (where indicated) and line up the “FOLD” edge on the fold. Cut out patterns. Cut two of the FRONT piece.

The pattern is made with a 1/8” seam allowance.

Sandwich your ribbon between the two “Front” cut pieces. Place fabric like sides together. Lay the ribbon ends about ½ in from each top corner. Pin the excess ribbon to the center so you don’t accidentally sew over it!

Sew around the edges, leaving the bottom (crotch) open.

Trim bulk, trim corners, etc. Turn right side out, and press. Use something pointy (pen, etc) to turn out the corners completely. Top stitch the front piece after pressing.

For the ruffles, I cut a rectangle that was 2” by 22” and one that was 2” by 14”. I totally winged it for this. I then zig-zag stitched one edge (so it won’t unravel), and used a gathering stich along the other long edge. I ruched the rectangles to a size that looked cute on the bum, and used a zig-zag stitch to attach them along the back piece.

baby romper tutorial and pattern

newborn romper tutorial and patternFold over the top edge of the“BACK” piece, sew along the edge creating a pocket for elastic.

newborn romper pattern

I tie my elastic to a bobby pin, and use the bobby pin to pull the elastic through the pocket. Stitch the elastic on one end, and snug the elastic up (so there is about 5 inches extra, and stitch it on the other end. This traps the elastic in the seam, and ruches the back.

free romper pattern

newborn romper tutorial and patternIMG_9091IMG_9090 Next, I line up the sides of the “Back” piece and the “Front” piece, and stich along each side. Because the back has elastic, it will not be as wide, and will not lay flat, but just line up one side at a time. Make sure the lay FRONT and BACK with right sides facing.

IMG_9093

After the side seams are sewn up, line up the crotch of the FRONT and BACK pieces. The back piece will be wider, not to worry. This is because you will be creating a pocket for the elastic in the legs, however the pocket will only be on the back piece. I like to do it this way so the romper lays nice and flat in front.IMG_9094

This last part is a little tricky, and there are TONS of ways to finish a leg hole, but this is what I did. I turned over about ¾” of the leg hole of the back piece, and sewed, creating a pocket for the elastic. I left each end open where it met the front of the leg. Next, use a bobby pin to thread elastic into the leg hole pocket. Secure one end of elastic with a few stitches. Then snug the elastic up, so the leg hole is gathered. The size of you leg hole is up to you, but I made mine a bit roomy to accommodate different sizes of baby. If you are making a romper for a chunky monkey, you will obviously want it a bit loose, and snug it up more for a lean baby. Once you have snugged up the elastic, stich the open end to trap the elastic. Repeat for the other leg hole.IMG_9095

Turn right side out, trim any loose threads, and admire your adorable romper!!

I have had the pleasure of working with this little lady three times now, and I just love watching her grow. She came in today to model some of the adorable vintage rompers and dresses I have in studio. I have been so drawn to the details, colors, and textures of vintage baby clothing and I have been hoarding them for the last few months. I just love they way they photograph, and I am excited to be able to offer them as an outfit option for my clients.

I have a TON of vintage outfits, primarily in newborn – 12 month sizes, but I have a few toddler sized as well. I even have a few adult dresses that would pair gorgeously for a “mommy and me” session. I am in love with the light, airy look and I am excited to try some gorgeous backlighting with these gauzy fabrics.

This little sweetheart rocked her session today, and modeled a TON of my vintage dresses/rompers. She was simply adorable, and even helped us with outfit changes! I am so drawn to the details and colors in these vintage outfits, and I am excited to have so many in studio for my clients to use.
