Cake Smash, First Birthday Photo Session

cake smash cake smash first birthdayCake smash sessions are one of my very favorites! It is such a fun way to celebrate a HUGE milestone (for baby AND mom and dad!!) I pretty much giggle through the entire session, and baby ALWAYS has fun. The best part? I do all the clean up.

Cake smash sessions are fun, messy, and adorable. We typically start out with typical portraits, in a cute birthday outfit. We will then strip baby down, and bring out the cake. The SMASH part of the session is entirely lead by baby, and it can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 25 minutes. Some babies gently and delicately taste test the cake before deciding to move on, some completely destroy the cake..but whatever they choose to do, its adorable. I just love how baby’s personality really comes out during the smash, and we capture every moment. I have had babies SIT on the cake, throw the cake, face plant into the cake.

Finally, we finish with a fun filled “bath” session. We clean baby up, then set up a fun bubble bath and I capture baby’s joy with the bubbles and warm water. Splashing is a must.

I love to create slideshows from the cake smash images, as it is such a great way to tell the story of the day. I hope you enjoy this little video!

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I LOVE CAKE SMASHES! I spend the entire time giggling over how adorable the birthday boy/girl is and how inquisitive they are at this age. Typically, my cake smashes happen in my studio (in Snohomish, very near Mill Creek). I usually start out with portraits of the birthday boy/girl, family shots, then move to the cake. We let the cake smash play out (sometimes baby LOVES it, sometimes not so much..) and we end with a warm, sudsy bubble bath. Smiles all around!!

Help me wish this little beauty a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! She turns ONE today, and we celebrated with a giant cake smash. She was a total natural in front of the camera (mom takes AWESOME pictures of her each month), and beyond sweet. Big brothers came along to cheer her on, and they are all as sweet and handsome as could be. Such a sweet, beautiful family. Here are a few of my favorites:

New products! Prints & Presents.

I have been hard a work putting together new packages to offer, and I am so excited to finally officially announce what I have come up with.

After working closely with some amazing local photographers, and spending a lot of time really thinking about my business…and why I love what I do, I decided that I would like to offer PRODUCTS (prints!) with every package and every session done with June Bug Photography. There are a million reasons that I have made this decision, but the number one reason is that prints are REAL. Prints are forever. Weather you choose to put them in a scrapbook, photo album, frame, or even in a box in the attic…they will still be stunning images in 50 years. Your great grandchildren will hold and treasure images of you and your family. That, to me, is beautiful. The digital age has certainly been a wonderful thing for photographers (we no longer have to worry about the expense of film & developing, we can instantly see if our photos are properly composed and exposed)…but there has also been a trend to stop PRINTING images. We have access to our photos on our phones, our computers, the “cloud”…which is so wonderful for sharing and enjoying now, but I worry about the future of these digital images.

I spent last Saturday by my grandmother’s bedside in the hospital, and began planning the slideshow I will create for her (to play in her room at Hospice care). When I got back to my Mom’s house, I began sorting through many photo albums (all labeled, of course, if you know my mother!). It brought tears to my eyes to see Granny in nearly every photo of family events, birthdays, school field trips..she was such a presence throughout our childhood and beyond. I then began to realize that I do not have ANY photo albums in my own home. I am a photographer, and I have not a single photo album for my children (or their children, one day) to flip through and remember all of the wonderful moments we have shared. Don’t get me wrong, I have photos…just not prints. All of my images are stored on hard drives, phones (some long lost phones..), picassa (which I never use anymore), zip drives, cds, dropbox, and surely some other long forgotten locations. In fact, EVERY photo I took in the first 9 months of my daughters life were stored “safely” on a laptop. A laptop that was stolen from my home.

This is why I have decided to make a conscious shift to provide prints for my clients (and myself!). Every package will include 4×6 images of your favorites from your session. I have had a lot of fun putting together a sweet keepsake box to store them all. You are, of course, welcome to make additional prints from your digital files (or from the online gallery). I have revamped my price list to reflect these changes, and you will still be receiving digital files of your favorite images!

Here are a few shots of my new products, I just LOVE how it all looks. Check out new pricing information HEREprints, digital images, keepsake boxproductsSnohomish county photography

First Birthday Photography Session, Snohomish photographer June Bug photography.

Here is a first birthday photography session from a few weeks ago! This handsome little guy turned ONE last week, and we had planned on doing a cake smash. Thankfully, mom discovered that he HATES the sight of cake before the session..so we ditched the cake idea! He rocked his session, and was so much fun. We danced, laughed, and did a lot of wranglin’ for this guy on the move. He is a total stunner with those eyes…I have had so many gorgeous baby blues in studio in the last few weeks!

I have been having a lot of fun with birthday sessions, and it was great to do one without a cake. It was a total blast, and we got some amazing images. I know that cake smashes are not for every baby (or mom!), but baby’s first birthday is such a HUGE milestone, and it is fun to capture the wonder, excitement, curiosity, and beauty these little ones experience.

I have had several requests to photograph weddings lately, and I have realized that photographing kiddos, babies, and families is definitely my calling. Brides are beautiful, and adults can be posed…but there is something so magical for me about capturing those real, fleeting moments kids experience.

Cake Smash PhotographyCelebrate with a Baby’s first birthday Cake Smash! I have been having a total blast with cake smashes in the last few months, and I just wanted to share my joy with you. I get such a kick out of the HUGE difference between all of the kiddos I have in studio. Each birthday boy & girl is so different when they first encounter the cake, and it is so fun to see their brains figure out that they have PERMISSION to dig in. Some literally dig in, some delicately dip a finger, some try to toss the cake, some crawl through it…while Mom, Dad, and I LAUGH the entire time. What an amazingly fun way to celebrate surviving the first year (as parents) and turning ONE YEAR OLD. The best part? I clean it all up! Here are a few highlights from my last few cake smash sessions. Enjoy!

June bug photography snohomish cake smash IMG_8161 Snonomish photographer, June Bug Photography Cake Smash photography snohomish countyDue to potential allergy issues, I have mom & dad bring along the cake to a cake smash. Through my MANY smashes, I have learned some great tips for the perfect smash cake. If you are making your own cake, a super moist cake is best. It will break apart easily, and baby can tear off chunks…which makes for great photos. Pound cake can be trick for babies to dig into. I recently had a mom bring in a cake from Fred Meyer (which cost her less than $5!), it small, moist, and had a whipped frosting. She had them custom make the cake, with custom colors and decorations. It was PERFECT.

This family is AMAZING!

Little L was born premature, and spent a loooong time at the University of Washington NICU, so Mom and Dad wanted to celebrate a happy memory on campus. We braved the rain, and I am so glad we did. We had a total blast. Dad is a riot, and had some awesome ideas for some funny shots. So much fun to play in the rain!!

Then, L met cake. You guys..I have NEVER had a cake smash go this amazingly well. She TORE INTO her cake, crawled through her cake, and smiled the whole time. Mom, Dad, and I were laughing uncontrollably the entire time. She is a total gem. Love her! Here are a few of my favorites from the session:

Another cake smash! I love love love photographing cake smashes. It is so much fun to see each little one’s expression as they first touch, taste, and (hopefully) smash their cake. It is such a celebratory moment in time, and so fun to capture the family’s joy over their little one turning ONE!

This sweet girl is one!! She was full of charm, and we had such a fun time watching her test her cake. She immediately tried to pick up the cake and toss it, but it was WAY too heavy. This little one was a perfect delight, and I hope to see her again!

What a way to celebrate making it through the first year! I love cake smashes, especially because they all unfold so differently depending on baby’s personality. This adorable little lady turned ONE a few weeks ago (I’m a bit late posting this one)! We celebrated early with an amazingly fun cake smash. This girl is not shy, and dug right into the cake. I don’t think I have had a baby “explore” the cake this much. She grabbed it, ate it, finger painted with it, spread it all over her arms. So. Much. Fun! Mom and dad are clearly smitten with their little one, and I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet this family. Mom is a genius, and got her cake from Fred Meyer. She paid under $5, and had it custom decorated and it was PERFECT. I highly recommend them for your cakes if you are planning a cake smash. She chose the whipped frosting, which was perfect for baby to grab and get into without feeling too sticky. Nice work mom!

Thinking about a cake smash to celebrate your little one’s upcoming birthday? Book ASAP, I have TONS of fun backdrops, props, and decorations to customize the session for your family. june bug photography baby photography IMG_8235 cake smash birthday photography snohomish

First Birthday Cake Smash, pretty in pink! Snohomish county photographer June Bug Photography.

This gorgeous birthday girl kept things pretty clean for her First Birthday Cake smash. Mom made an amazing cake, and a super sweet banner (featuring photos from Baby’s first 12 months!). I got to meet 2 of 3 big brothers, and both were so sweet with their little sister! She is clearly smitten with her family, as she kept trying to feed them all dollops of frosting. So sweet! We even had time for some adorable “bath time” photos for clean up.

First birthdays are so much fun, and it is awesome to capture baby’s first bite of cake with a cake smash. A sample of our props, backdrops, wraps, etc. Snohomish county photographer June Bug Photography.

I have mentioned before the I am a bit of a prop junkie. Well, I figured I should let you all have a sneak peek BEFORE coming into the studio. I have seen the “deer in the headlights” look from moms who are totally overwhelmed by all of their choices, and I want to solve that problem. I pulled out a bunch of my props, I JUST FINISHED sewing 12 buntings, and I threw together a few sample set ups for some inspiration! Take a look, and let me know if any fit your style! We can (obviously) mix & match anything seen here…and this only SOME of what I have.

I have a bunch of other smaller backdrops, but I got a little overwhelmed trying to sample everything. Have something in mind that you don’t see here? JUST ASK, and I will try my best to make it happen!

Here is a quick look at the birthday hats, ties, and bowties I have in studio. I made the ties and hats to coordinate with our buntings and Banners. Bow Ties made by the wonderful A Rose For Rae

And a simple blue themed set up. Great for newborns, toddlers, or smash the cake sessions.

I have a ton of newborn props, and also do much of a newborn session on my beanbag…but this little blue bed is sooo adorable!!

I love the simplicity of this set up, and the bright bunting. This would be adorable for first birthday photographs, as well as a cake smash, or even a newborn. Love the gender neutral set ups!

Woodland themed bunting pairs nicely with the wood crate and green wraps. I love to pop my crawlers into crates…as it keep them from scooting away. Plus, it just looks adorable. This set up would be perfect for a newborn, a first birthday cake smash, or even a school aged little one.

Newborn prop set up

Teal and grays paired with a vintage wash basin. Perfect for newborns, or sitters. This basin is a great sitter assister. Keeps the new sitters from toppling over!

Here is one of my “go to” newborn props. My nest is so perfect for those newly hatched babies! I love how this prop can be used with all sorts of different wraps, throws, buntings, etc. to change up the look.

A grungy, edgy set up. Brick wall, torn fabric bunting, and vintage luggage on a wire crate. For bad-ass babies only.

Polka dots & deer in glasses? A timeless classic. Ha. I love the gray with this turquoise bunting. Imagine a toddler in black rimmed glasses? Great for a cake smash, birthday session, or an older kiddo!

Props, smash cake

Cowboy (or cowgirl!) themed set, with cowboy bunting and color coordinating rocking chair and stool.

Can someone let me borrow a new sitter to use this set up for? I’m in love!! I am sort of obsessed with my tiny couch, and love how nice it looks with the gray backdrop. All little girls look adorable in this one. For reals.

White brick backdrop, with CHALKBOARD BUNTING. I love with this banner, as it can be personalized for any occasion. Perfect for birthday photography, cake smash photos, newborns, and just about anything else! Also I am smitten with my new chair.

This chair is AMAZING because it works great for my mamas, as well as kiddos (and babies who are sitting). I just love how tiny it makes the littles look, and it is a beautiful chair for the bigs too!

For my newborn photography, I tend to use a TON of different wraps. I just love the pop of color you can add with a simple wrap. I have wraps in all colors for both boys and girls.

Knit hats, knit wraps, knit nests…I can’t get over how adorable they all are. It makes my uterus ache. I have a HUGE selection of newborn hats, newborn wraps, newborn nests…etc. in studio. Awesome.

This is about when I got lazy. Instead of setting these up, I figured you can get the idea of the different blankets I have if I just took a picture of my blanket shelf. Sorry (Not sorry). Also check out my cake stands. There are more, but these are some of them!

Blankets and backdrops

…annnnnnd here is where I gave up all together. I didn’t even set up any lighting, or even turn the studio lights off so they wouldn’t be backlit. Here is my tower of buckets, bins, and crates. Oh, and vintage luggage.
